Reporting your progress and findings to UW-Madison and your funding agency is an essential part of the research process.

Your grant administrator and Research and Sponsored Programs (RSP) can help you report spending, grant modifications, and other finance related items throughout the course of the grant.

The following tools will help you with the reporting process.

WISER Provides Financial Reporting and No Cost Extensions

Once Principal Investigators (PIs) have at least one funded project, RSP enables their access to WISER. WISER provides training, tools, and financial reporting and can be used for submitting monthly and fund-department reports. RSP submits financial reports to sponsors and will notify PIs if they require supplemental materials or information. PIs can also work with their grant administrator to submit No Cost Extensions through WISER.

Certify Your Effort with ECC

The Employee Compensation Compliance (ECC) is used to certify the effort of each person paid on a research project. Some people must certify their own effort while others must be certified by the PI. Online training for effort reporting is available through the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Portal. Effort reporting is necessary to ensure that:

• salaries charged to sponsored projects are reasonable in relation to the work performed; and
• faculty and staff have met their commitments to sponsored projects

The PI Portal

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (OVCR) provides the PI Portal, a dashboard and on-ramp for all research administration and compliance. This dashboard provides access and guidance for:

• financial information including proposals, projects, and effort
• protocols and safety including human subjects, animal research, stem cell research, biological and chemical safety, and radiation safety
• ethics and privacy training
• non-financial agreements
• Outside Activities reports
